The reception afforded Jim Carrey was a favourable one as he took centre stage at the premiere of his new film on Tuesday evening.

The Canadian actor greeted fans with characteristic enthusiasm while celebrating the launch of retrospective documentary Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond at the 74th annual Venice Film Festival.

Sporting a metallic grey two-piece suit, Jim, 55, was in high spirits as he posed for photographs and obliged those who had patiently waited for a glimpse of the Hollywood star with autographs and selfies.

Joined by producers Danny Gabbai, Eddy Moretti and director Chris Smith – who he greeted with a warm embrace – he flashed a beaming smile while making his way across the red carpet.

Relishing the spotlight, Jim kept onlookers entertained with a series of typically wacky gestures and facial expressions as his film prepared to launch out of competition at the annual film festival.

The actor has sailed into Venice for the world premiere of his documentary Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond, which recounts the creative process he masterminded during production of 1999 Andy Kaufman biopic Man On The Moon.

The star received critical acclaim for his portrayal of the late entertainer, winning a prestigious Golden Globe.

Arriving in Venice to promote the new film on Monday, he surprised fans by revealing a new clean-cut look after shaving off his notoriously bushy beard.

Back in May, the then-bearded star appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live where he joked about his facial hair, saying: 'It's a bigger star than me. It has its own Twitter.'

The comedian then went even further during his late night TV show interview.

With host Jimmy looking on, he joked: 'The question is not, "Why are you growing a beard?" The question is, "Why am I growing a beard and still shaving my b***s?"

Away from his work commitments, the Canadian-born star has been embroiled in a wrongful death lawsuit surrounding his ex Cathriona White, who took her own life on September 25, 2015.

A year later, her mother and estranged husband filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Hollywood actor.

In documents obtained by DailyMail.com last month, Cathriona told her therapist she wanted to 'have it all stop' as she struggled to eat and sleep while dealing with constant vomiting that was caused by the anxiety she was experiencing from her relationship with the actor.

That admission was made on July 18, 2013 and included in medical records from White's doctors that have been subpoenaed by lawyers for both Carrey and White's mother Brigid Sweetman in her wrongful death lawsuit against the actor.
