Sexual assault alleged at Lucas County jail
The Lucas County Sheriff's Office is investigating an allegation that one or more male Lucas County jail inmates gained access Sunday evening to the cell of a female inmate who was then sexually assaulted.
Sheriff John Tharp said Monday he was not sure how many people were reported as involved in the incident.
Men and women are usually segregated at the jail, the sheriff said, but on Sunday evening inmates were being moved around within the jail because a water pipe had burst and flooded part of the facility.
It was that activity that created the opportunity for the incident to occur, he said.
Sheriff's office detectives and the internal affairs bureau are handling the investigation, Sheriff Tharp said.
